If there is a time for horror, a time for being scared or a time for
watching horror movies, that is definitely Halloween. Just like this holiday, horror movies are made on the
concept of fear, the most dreadful human feeling ever. Unexpected characters, haunting things, cemeteries,
symbols of death, of evil and of the supernatural, there is not much of a difference between the two. In fact,
Halloween is like a 3D horror movie. Or should I say a 4D horror movie? Either way, on this day, it is like
living your own scary plot with scary Halloween costumes.
As the two are so much related, some of the horror movies even get the title of Halloween movies, being
conceived and directed in that very spirit, with plots taking place on the 31st of October or other such
coincidences. Of course, there are a lot of movies which make use of Halloween elements, but not necessarily horror
movies.
Even Emil Kusturica directed a film entitled “Black Cat, White Cat”, but that surely does not mean that it is a
scary movie or a Halloween movie, although it has one of the most pertinent symbols of the autumn holiday in the
title. Coming back on the right track, Halloween has inspired some of the most successful horror movies of all
times.
THE Halloween movie
Without a shadow of a doubt, the most successful Halloween movie in the entire history of horror cinematography
is “Halloween”, the film directed in 1978 by John Carpenter. This movie started from the “Assault on Precinct 13”,
the thriller Carpenter directed two years earlier and only had about three hundred thousand dollars at its
disposal. Of course, this may seem as quite an enormous sum of money for that period, but it was not really.
That sum was actually a little pretentious when it came to convincing big stars to act in the movie, but
eventually Donald Pleasance showed up for what turned to be one of the legends of cinematography, a film which
audiences of all ages must have heard of. It actually won a record forty-seven million dollars at the box office,
which determined its producers to make more sequels of the popular “Halloween” movie. Its plot describes the story
of a six-year old kid, Mike Myers, who kills his sister on Halloween, after which he ends up in a mental hospital.
Here he has the bad luck of meeting doctor Loomis, who tries all kinds of experiments on him, which determines the
boy to run away from the hospital, coming back home and running after babysitters on Halloween.
Annie and Linda, as well as the latter’s boyfriend, Bob fall as his victims. Mike’s victims can only be helped
to escape him by his former psychiatrist, Dr. Loomis and the local police, the sheriff being Annie’s father, Mike’s
most precious Halloween victim being Laurie, one of the babysitter friends, the only one that has not been killed
so far. Of course, this would be a sort of detailed plot, but telling is certainly not as fun as seeing the whole
movie and the masterpiece within it.
Other remembered Halloween movies would be “Sleepy Hollow” in 1999, “Trick ‘r Treat” in 2009, “Satan’s Little
Helper” in 2004 or “Dark Night of the Scarecrow” in 1981, but the simple fact that these movies have had such great
success is just a starting point for ambitious horror movie directors, there actually being a series of very
promising upcoming horror movies on their way to the hearts of all audiences, such as “Antichrist”, “Blood: The
Last Vampire” or the sixth sequel of the “Saw” series. In case these titles sound somewhat blurry to you and you do
not recognize them yet, here are some hints.
“Trick ‘r Treat” is like an encyclopaedia of Halloween myths, such as the myth of trick-or-treating or that of
jack-o-lanterns, the little pumpkins lighted by candles on the inside, unfolded around the fire on Halloween, when
people start telling scary stories, a traditional custom when it comes to this holiday. Then, “Sleepy Hollow” is
what introduced the legend of the headless horseman into the Halloween holiday. Although there is nowhere in the
movie specified that the action takes place on Halloween, it is full of symbols of this particular holiday,
emphasizing the atmosphere necessary for such a spooky story. As far as “Satan’s Little Helper” is concerned, the
Halloween movie produced in 2004 leads its fans into the way a boy who has hallucinations make friends with a
serial killer, thought to have come from a video game. This killer has the devil’s appearance and easily talks the
kid into becoming his complice to his murders. This sounds interesting enough for Halloween.
Who Would You Like To Be?
Present or past, horror movies and Halloween movies have had an incredible impact upon Halloween believers
and amateurs. Of course no Halloween can pass without going to a Halloween party. In fact, that may be the most
interesting part of this holiday, together with the spooky stories and the wandering about in cemeteries thing,
because you get to disguise yourself in different Halloween costumes, some crazier, sexier, cuter or scarier than
others. So why would people not wear famous costumes on Halloween if they saw they had so much success with
audiences everywhere? You may not know how inspired their nurse or bunny costume may turn out to be, but success in
guaranteed if haunting people in Frankenstein or Dr. Loomis costumes.
What would you say if Freddie Krueger came after you on Halloween, with his chopped up face and his fingers
replaced by knives? There are lots of shops which sell such famous costumes and some of them can even be made at
home, but that might be a little bit risky in this situation. For example, it seems quite unlikely to succeed in
making a glove to replace Freddie Krueger’s hand, doesn’t it? A Beetlejuice Halloween costume, a Michael Myers one,
a Hellraiser Pinhead one or a Jason Voorhees one, those would be only some ideas of an inspired Halloween costume.
Or, think about a psycho mother’s dress or a Saw pig costume; that would be even funnier. Hannibal Lector,
Leatherface, Scream costumes, Sweeney Todd, Chucky, When birds attack costume, these would be only some ideas, but
this list of possible Halloween costumes inspired from scary movies can go on and on for ages.
It does not really matter if you are a horror movie amateur on an ordinary day. The chances are very high that you
become a horror movie amateur on Halloween. If you think about it, there is no way you can escape being haunted or
experiencing fear on this special day of the year. That would mean that you are not having any fun or that
something would be wrong. But at least, even if you are not a regular horror movie fan, when it comes to this, you
should be looking to watch a very good Halloween movie, if not, where would be the thrill? You have a lot of
choices, but no matter what you do, if you have not seen “Halloween” yet, you should start there. We’ve heard it’s
really good.
