Casino Royale Movie – The Remake in Review

Casino Royale 2007 is based on Ian Fleming's very first James Bond novel, this remake of the original 1967 Casino Royale movie starring David Niven and Peter Sellers stars Daniel Craig as James Bond. However the original was more of a satire of the James Bond series rather than one to be taken as seriously as one of the movies starring say Roger Moore or Sean Connery. This newer version is a far more serious adaptation of the book and despite being the first blond Bond, Craig pulls the role off fantastically asserting himself as the perfect successor in a long line of outstand Bonds.

The Movie

Based on the Ian Fleming book by the same name it does not seem to have quite the same feel for James Bond movies as they have in the past. This movie is has far more depth to it than most of the previous efforts.

The multiple layers of criminals who all seem to report to someone up the line add to the depth of the story making it a little more enjoyable then the standard James Bond movie where the winning odds are always stacked in his favour whether he is getting his girl, getting shot at or playing blackjack in the casino.

Sadly one of the best parts of any James Bond movie is lacking in this version of the Casino Royale movie, there are not enough gadgets.

Everyone knows that James is always loaded with the best collection of gadgets and secret weapons, guaranteed to get him out of any circumstance he should find himself in. Not so in this movie as he must rely more on his wits to stay alive and save the world from the bad guys.

The Luck and the Girls

Image of Casino Royal Movie. The biggest part of the movie centers on James sitting in the casino trying his hand at cards playing a game of no limit, hold em poker. The modern version eschews the classic game of baccarat as perhaps very few people in the day and age would have any idea how game and in its place the high stakes poker game. You do not even get to see James try his luck at the roulette wheel; he is a thoroughly modern spy who is quite comfortable with his poker hand.

As with any James Bond movie there are plenty of beautiful women to be seen, but there is a subtle twist in this movie. Where we are used to seeing beautiful ladies come up out of the water, in this movie they also cater to the ladies who are treated to the sight of James coming up out of the water instead. Never say never when it comes to Hollywood twisting the tail a little to make a statement or just to be different.

While the Casino Royale movie is still a good overall Bond movie the excessive twists in the plots and the lack of gadgets leave the diehard Bond fan feeling like the movie is somewhat lacking in its ability to stick to the true James Bond style we all know and love.
