3D Movie- 3 Dimensions Bring the Movie to Life

After years of lingering in the dark closets of the movie studios the 3D movie is back and this time it looks like it is here to stay. However this is not the 3D of yesteryear, thanks to amazing technological advances the 3D you see today will only leave you wanting more. The technology is so advanced there is now talk of 3D coming to your living room on your TV set within the next few years.

The Old Days

Image of 3D Movies. In reality we as human beings are the original 3D machines, other than a few unfortunate souls we see everything in three dimensions because we have what is known as binocular vision. This means that we have two eyes separated by a space of 2 to 3 inches on the front of our face.

This separation causes each of our eyes to see from a slightly different angle, which provides us with depth perception. Our brain takes these two images and creates one single image in our minds that uses the difference between them to help calculate distance and depth of the field of view.

There are of course differing opinions as to when the first 3D movie came out, but the most commonly accepted answer is the film "L'arrivé du Train by the originators of the motion picture, the Lumière Brothers in 1903. They are credited with creating stereoscopic movies and the results were said to be so realistic that the audience panicked as the train appeared to leap out of the screen at them. This was a remake of the same film which was first made in 1895.

In the 50s the 3D movie was all the rage as thousands of movie goers happily donned their 3D glasses to watch movies like House of Wax and Creature from the Black Lagoon. These movies continued on through the 80s with movies like Jaws 3D as the movie industry continued to improve on the technology, seeking new ways to thrill audiences and keep the theaters packed.

Into the 21st century the 3D movie may have finally come into its own with dozens of the top movie producers working with 3D such as DreamWorks, Walt Disney and directors such as Robert Zemeckis, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg all working to create the ultimate 3D experience the next time you go to the movies.

Time to Put on Your Glasses

It used to be that if you wanted to watch a 3D Movie you had to put on a pair of special glasses to see the movie properly. These glasses featured on red lens and on blue lens and the process by which they worked is known as anaglyph, the movies and equipment for this type of 3D movie are relative inexpensive, but the results were not as good as most people would have liked.

Today theaters use technology that makes use of polarized glasses in some cases and the very latest cutting edge 3D movie technology does not require the use of any kind of glass whatsoever, but both of these technologies are very expensive to implement and very few theaters have that kind of money to spend.
